Bio of Doom
Name you are known by: Lukas
Your real name: Lukas Meadows
Coffee or Tea: I like herbal teas, especially mint tea. Oh, my friend Katrin brought me some candy cane flavored tea from a shop and I love it, but I don't want to drink it all since she said I have to wait until winter before it comes back.
Family: My immediate family is my mom and dad and my little sister, then my aunt and cousin. Outside of that, there's the whole herd and it's about 60 members strong right now…
Fave motifs: I like things that are cozy and green. Winter, when things aren't all howling wind and frozen hocks, is the best.
Perfume, or "grab their jacket and take a whiff": I don't like overly strong or fake smells so ... the latter I guess? Unless this is about being clean, then I'm much more of a clean smells guy.
Best fitting insult: dandelion is what some of the others call me sometimes. My head is full of fluff. I don't know if that really translates outside of the herd though…
Tell me something obvious about yourself: I'm not human.
Tell me something about yourself that I don't know: Hmm. I don't actually like the Beatles, which is apparently a huge deal among musicians. I just don’t feel strongly about them and all the rabid fans kind of made me not like them at all.
What is your biggest fear: Accidentally hurting someone, physically or emotionally.
Do you normally take the safe route or the shortcut: If I’m on my own, I'll take the safe route every time, even if it's going to take longer. But, if I’m with others and they’re going through the shortcut, I might resist a bit, but I’d rather stick with the group than go it alone.
What is the one thing you want the most that you can't buy with money: This is a tough one… I guess friends.
What is your most treasured possession: My guitar.
What is the one thing you hate most about yourself that you do the most often: Probably second guess myself.
Tell me something about you sexually that I don't know: I would hope you wouldn't know anything about me sexually.
Tell me something about you sexually that everybody knows: Probably that I haven't had any experiences. Or interest.
What is your favorite lie to tell: It wasn't me.
Name something you have done once that you can't wait to do again: See a live concert. There was this open air orchestral concert happening in town and the twins and I really wanted to go, but of course we couldn’t because I wasn’t allowed to leave the property and they weren’t allowed to leave the property, so we faked like we were going to camp out in the woods for the night and snuck to a spot where we could hear it and it was incredible. They played the music from Star Trek.
Are you the jealous type: I can get a bit jealous sometimes, but I try not to let it get to me.
What is the one person, place or thing that you can never say no to: My mom, definitely.
What is the nicest thing someone has ever done for you: I think it would have to be my friend's mom talking to my mom about letting me study music formally. That was incredible.
If you could do something crazy right now, what would it be: I'm not a 'crazy' sort of guy, but ... If I was going to do something wild, anything at all, it would probably be sneaking into another outdoor concert.
When was the last time you cried: Probably the time I got stuck in the marsh. I think I panicked because I thought nobody would be able to find me. I was twelve. I also got a bit teary when saying bye to mom and dad.
When was the last time you felt so good that nothing else mattered: When I first was able to play a song perfectly for my mom. Her being so proud of me was the best feeling ever.
Do you feel comfortable in public with no shirt on: Of course. Why wouldn't I be?
Name something embarrassing you did while drunk: I don't drink so I've never been drunk.
Weakness: I can overheat quickly if I'm not careful and I do have to eat a lot to maintain a solid baseline. Usually we're snacking most of the day, since one big meal can make me sick.
Also, peppermints. I am a sucker for peppermint.
Magic: I don't have magic (ooc: He does, in fact, have magic, but is not currently aware of it)
Part 1: The Basics
1. What is your full name? Lukas Meadows
2. Where and when were you born? I was born in Phillips County in Montana. There's a large parcel of land that my herd manages and a magical human family 'owns'. We work together to keep things safe and running and they are a kind of bridge between us and the outside world.
3. Who are/were your parents? Mom: Paige Meadows. She's an amazing weaver. We have sheep and alpaca on the property and my mom takes the fibers spun from their wool into artwork that gets sold at the farmer's market in town by Laura -she's the mom of my best friends and a human witch-. Mom is trying to teach my little sister and tried to teach me, but I don't know if either of us were super interested. She's the one in charge of our band, and she is very organized and good at being firm, but fair. Some of the others in the herd come to her sometimes to settle arguments.
Dad: Jarrod Meadows. He does carpentry work and actually helped to build some of the out buildings we use as a herd. He's very much the joker of not just our family, but kind of the whole herd. He's always playing games and making everyone laugh. It's a bit of a contrast to mom's more serious personality, but I think they're together because of those differences.
4. Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like? I do! I have a little sister, Rachel. She's thirteen now and is learning to do some medical work for the livestock on the property. She's been studying under Maria, who is one of the women in a different band. Mom and dad were talking about Rachel going to join Maria's band when she's old enough, but it'll be up to Rachel in the end. She's pretty serious, like our mom, and she's always telling on me to mom and dad. She also tells me I'm a weirdo all the time, but I think it's from a place of love. I tease her too, but I'd fight anybody that tried to hurt her. I think she'd do the same for me.
5. Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place and the person/people. Well, before going to Schutzhafen, I lived with my parents, my sister, my aunts and a cousin on a rural property in Northern Montana. It’s beautiful up there with lots of space to roam without any serious danger. There’s also the whole herd up there, and so I also live with them, but I’m not around them very much. My family lives closer to the main house and property that the Palewards live on and the rest of the herd is pretty spread out.
The Paleward family is Mr. and Mrs. Paleward, their twins Katrin and Aldrin, and there was a new baby Myra that they adopted from another magic family. I don’t know much about her though, since she’s a baby.
6. What is your occupation? A farm hand? Student? I don’t really have a ‘job’ technically, but those are the closest thing I guess.
7. Write a full physical description of yourself. You might want to consider factors such as: height, weight, race, hair and eye color, style of dress, and any tattoos, scars, or distinguishing marks. Hmm. From hoof to withers, I’m about 5 foot, so from hoot to the top of my head …. I think I’m a bit above 7 feet tall? I know it’s more than 7, but I don’t know how much. I’m not good with metric yet though, so I don’t know what that is in centimeters or anything. Last time I weighed myself, I think I was around 1300 pounds. I’m still not done growing though, and it looks like I’ve got another half a foot or a whole foot more to go and I’ll probably get close to 1400 pounds. Pretty average for us really.
I have a dark chestnut coloring on my body and through my fur, almost a deep dark brown, but my tail, mane, and hair are all gold and can be curly if it’s cut too short. Aldwin showed me a photo of a Black Forest horse once and I kind of look like that. Except, you know, the parts of me that don’t look like that. I’ve got white boots on three legs, but my left front leg is all dark. And I have an irregular white star over my right eye. If it came down farther, I might have even gotten a blue eye, but both of my eyes are regular old brown.
I usually try to keep my hair tied up or braided and l keep my tail braided as well usually. It’s good to keep it out of the way while working, but formal occasions call for formal styles and I hate doing that. We don’t usually wear clothes unless we’re working and need the extra protection, or there’s something formal going on. Oh, or when we’re around the human magic family. They say they don’t mind, but they wear clothes so it’s polite to have something on I think. I wear a lot of t-shirts then, or if it’s cold, I’ve got a nice coat I got as a gift last year that covers down to the shoulders of my forelegs and it’s very comfortable for really cold days. I probably wear clothes more often than some of the others in the herd, just because I spend a lot of time with the Palewards, but it’s not something I’m attached to. Formal clothing tends to be mostly tunics or wraps; things that don’t hinder movement. Mostly we’ll wear formal decorations on arms and necks, and we’ll make an effort to make our tails and manes look fancy. I’ve got some caparisons to wear if I have to. They’re pretty basic, made from different kinds of cloth. Cotton, canvas, that kind of thing. Most of what I brought to wear at school is cotton or wool t-shirts and sweaters. I have soft boots for walking indoors or places where scuffing the floor might be an issue and I have plenty of farrier gear for regular shoes.
8. To which social class do you belong? Depends on the social I guess. I’m not dominant in the band or herd, so … regular class. Middle class? I know that as far as money is concerned, I’m probably low in standing. Anything we need that involves money, we work for instead.
9. Do you have any allergies, diseases, or other physical weaknesses? I can get overheated if I’m not careful, though my upper body can still get cold before my lower body does. No allergies I know of, or diseases.
10. Are you right- or left-handed? Right-handed.
11. What does your voice sound like? I’m told it’s soft, a bit deep, but not as bassy as my dad’s. When I sing, I usually sing as a tenor, but I can hit baritone without too much trouble.
12. What words and/or phrases do you use very frequently? A lot of filler words, like um and uh. I think I probably apologize a lot.
13. What do you have in your pockets? I don’t usually have clothes with pockets, but I almost always have a sling pack over my shoulder. In there, I’ve got some boots, a curry comb and a brush, extra strings, a bunch of guitar picks, some snacks, one of those microfiber quick dry towels, and a small first aid kit. If I’ve got my guitar bag, then I’ll move the guitar supplies to the guitar bag and have just one hip bag with the snacks and boots and stuff in there. If I need to pack for anything more major, I have bags to sling across my lower back that carry a lot more stuff.
14. Do you have any quirks, strange mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics? It’s not really a quirk among other centaurs, but I think it’s weird among others … I can and will doze off standing up. When I was little, I’d doze off and kind of flop my head and arms to the side, but now I usually cross my arms and bow my head and doze off that way. I do actually sleep laying down though, just in case anybody had that question.
Part 2: Growing Up
15. How would you describe your childhood in general?
16. What is your earliest memory? Gosh. My earliest, clearest memory, is of being in a field, sitting with my mom. She was braiding my dad’s tail and singing a song.
17. How much schooling have you had? I haven’t done anything that might be called “formal” schooling, but I did sit in with the twins homeschooling lessons so I’ve got the same level of education they have in everything but magic. They’re magic users, not me, so I couldn’t join in those lessons. I took the same SAT they did, but mine isn’t formal or recorded. I did pretty good on that.
I also got the education all members of my herd get. I’ve learned basic astronomy, animal husbandry, farming, land management, botany, that kind of stuff. Basic medicine for myself and animals.
And Mr. Paleward taught me how to play guitar too. I wound up wanting to learn all the strings, but so far I only own a guitar and a lap harp. I did learn some other instruments that Mr. Paleward has, like the banjo, mountain dulcimer, mandolin, that kind of thing. I’d love to try out a violin or something, but haven’t been able to. They’re expensive and really delicate.
18. Did you enjoy school? I did! I really liked learning and it was kind of like another chance to spend time with my friends. It will be weird to be at a school without them around.
19. Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities? Most of the skills I have, except for the music part, I learned from my family. All the educational stuff, math, reading, writing papers, that was all the Palewards teaching me, but the forest stuff and natural science stuff? Most of that was my parents.
20. While growing up, did you have any role models?
21. While growing up, how did you get along with the other members of your family? We’re pretty close I think. I think my parents were worried about me since I was the only foal in my year. They were kind of overprotective I think until I could really get around and spend time away from them.
Centaur foals grow pretty quickly for the first two years of life, then we slow down and match more human-like levels of aging. So when we’re born, for about a week, we can’t walk or really do much and we’re pretty helpless. After that, we start being able to take wobbly steps, but it’s about a year before we’re really more mobile and active and by then we’re close to about a four year old human I think? And usually you’re learning how to move around and play with other centaurs your level of development, but since I didn’t have anybody at my level, my mom and dad were kind of at a loss. So, protective, but yeah. We’re close.
I also think of the Palewards as being family and I feel like we’re close too.
